TROGLODYTE
Troglodyte, noun
(especially in prehistoric times) a person who lived in a cave
- a hermit
- a person who is regarded as being deliberately ignorant or old-fashioned.
Thom Crowhurst's 2024 solo show TROGLODYTE explores the artistic ramifications of returning to his old stomping ground of Canberra after an extended period of world travel, psychological freedom and artistic exploration. His paintings range from whimsical colourful experiments, playing with composition, medium and abstraction, to the reassembly of the human form into a much more sombre motif. This body of work serves as a timeline to Crowhurst's journey from carefree travelling artist thriving in new, vibrant surrounds to his return to the unfortunately familiar. Where the weight of the world is much more apparent, and the desire to bury his head in the sand far more tempting. With works on display spanning from early 2023 in Glasgow to 2024 in Canberra, TROGLODYTE focuses on the journey of his oeuvre and how one's circumstances and physical surroundings will inevitably have an impact on the art produced.
Thom Crowhurst is a multi-disciplinary artist who specialises in painting. Following an extended period of
artistic hibernation and world travel, he has re-entered the public art sphere to showcase his striking oeuvre
to new audiences. In 2023 he completed a 6 month artistic residency based in Glasgow, UK where he host-
ed his first solo show, comprising over 100 works completed during the period. 2024 has seen a productive
year thus far with the opening of his private studio, and the creation of several works for high profile collec-
tors and national competitions.
Now based in Canberra Australia, he works out of his studio in Fyshwick and is currently open for Australian
and international exhibition opportunities.
